HILTON HEAD ISLAND, a beautiful Island and rich in History too.

Just a little History

This island was already occupied by Indians 1450 B.C.

In 1663 Captain William Hilton, an english Sea Captain, sailed from Barbados and arrived at Port Royal Sound. Hilton claimed this Island for the British Crown and named it Hilton's Head.

In 1698 John Bayley of Ireland took title to 16,200 acres and in 1722 he appointed his son Col. Alexander Trench to be the first Real Estate agent. The Island was renamed "Trench's Island"

In 1740 Indigo was introduced to the Island. It produced a blue dye and sold to England for dying fabrics.

In 1790 the planters started growing Sea Island Long Staple Cotton, which flourished in the warm subtropical climate.

After November 7,1861 "Battle of Port Royal Sound" nearly 30,000 Union troops were stationed on Hilton Head.

In 1862 the Post Office and Island name was changed to "Port Royal" which was the Union's Department of the South.

In 1872 the Island's official name was changed to "Hilton Head Island".

Modern Hilton Head began in 1956, when Charles Fraser began developing the Southend of the Island and named it Sea Pines Plantation. Hilton Head is the second largest Island on the East Coast. The Island is shaped like a shoe, about 12 miles long, up to 4 miles wide and encompasses about 42 square miles. The beach extends almost the entire length of the Island. Beautiful palms and palmettos, magnolias, tall pines and ancient oaktrees grow right up to the beachline. On the Island we do have 23 golf courses including the world famous HarbourTown Links, an Airport and a great Hospital.

Whether you enjoy golf, tennis, biking, horseback riding, walk in a nature preserve, good restaurants, a nice play at the Art Center, shopping or just lounging on a great beach. Hilton Head has something for everyone.

This is not "just another pretty place", Hilton Head is a very special Island.

About Wolfgang

My family and I were living in Long Island NY, when a friend tried to convince us to move to Hilton Head Island. Leaving a big city and moving South, and to a smaller Island, did not sound too appealing. So, we bought a Motorhome and traveled around this country for a few month. Hilton Head looked great, but we were not sure. Florida was OK, but not many trees - Texas was too big - California was really nice, but very crowded. So, we decided Hilton Head is "The Place". In the Summer of 1980 we moved here and never looked back. Once you live here, the Island grows on you. We made a lot of friends and after so many years we still love this place we call home. We do enjoy bike riding, a walk on the beach, take a swim in the ocean, play some golf, enjoy the many activities the Island has to offer, or just relax by the pool.

In 1980 I made my Real Estate license, and the following year I became a Broker. In all these years I helped make dreams come true for many families. Most of my clients are not "just business associates", we became friends.

Real Estate is more than just a job, I am committed and I love this business.
